Orthodontic Emergency Care

Orthodontic treatment is designed to be smooth and predictable, but occasionally orthodontic emergencies can happen. Whether it’s a loose bracket, a poking wire, or an injury to the mouth, knowing what to do can help keep your treatment on track.

At Honey Orthodontics in Gurnee, IL, Dr. Oana Honey and our team are here to help guide you through these situations quickly and safely. Most orthodontic emergencies are minor and can be managed temporarily at home until you can visit our office for a repair. If you’re new to our practice or have questions about how treatment works, your first visit is a great opportunity to learn what to expect during orthodontic care and how to handle common situations that may arise.

Orthodontic Appliance Emergencies

Sometimes orthodontic appliances may become bent, loose, or broken during treatment. These issues are fairly common and are usually easy to fix during a scheduled visit. If you experience any of the following issues, contact Honey Orthodontics during office hours so we can schedule an appointment:

  • Loose brackets or bands
  • Broken or poking wires
  • Bent orthodontic appliances
  • Irritation from tie wires

Because our schedule is carefully arranged to accommodate all patients, emergencies are typically handled by appointment rather than walk-in visits.

Temporary Solutions Until Your Appointment

While waiting to see our team, a few simple steps may help reduce discomfort:

  • Irritating tie wire: Cover it with orthodontic wax or gently tuck it under the archwire using a pencil eraser or cotton swab.
  • Loose bracket or band: In most cases, it can remain in place until your scheduled appointment.
  • Poking archwire: Carefully bend it inward with a pencil eraser or trim the tip with clean nail clippers if necessary.

These temporary fixes can help relieve irritation until we are able to repair the appliance in our office.

Injuries to the Teeth or Mouth

In some situations, a direct injury to the mouth or teeth may occur during sports, accidents, or other activities.

If this happens:

  1. Apply ice to the affected area to reduce swelling.
  2. Contact your general dentist immediately, especially if a tooth has been chipped, displaced, or knocked out.
  3. Your dentist may take X-rays to evaluate the extent of the injury.

Your general dentist is typically best equipped to handle dental trauma because they may need anesthesia or specialized materials. After your dentist addresses the injury, our team at Honey Orthodontics can evaluate and repair any orthodontic appliances that were affected.

After-Hours Orthodontic Emergencies

If discomfort occurs outside of normal office hours, please contact our office phone number. Instructions will be provided for reaching the appropriate contact or receiving guidance for managing the situation until the office reopens.

Our goal is to ensure that every patient receives the support they need while continuing orthodontic treatment comfortably and safely.
